Fixed braces are the bracket and wire systems that move the crown and root accurately. They are often worn for 1 - 2 years. There are various options of fixed appliances depending on the complexity of the case and the patient's preference - the conventional brackets with coloured elastic ligatures or newer self ligating appliances with gate systems to hold wires in place. Damon self ligating appliances have less friction and allow teeth to move quickly, more comfortably and with fewer appointments.
Clear Braces are made from porcelain. These brackets are popular with adult patients as they are less visable.
Functional braces are removable braces used in children during the prepubertal growth phase to improve protruding teeth and jaw growth. A second phase of fixed braces are often required after the functional phase of treatment.
Removable Braces can be used in younger children to correct teeth inside the bite, reduce deep bites or align crooked teeth. Once this treatment is complete the brace is used as a retainer to keep the teeth in place.
Retainers - All patients will receive retainers at the end of their treatment - either bonded or removable depending on the case. It is vital that these are worn as the teeth will always want to move back to their initial position
Orthognathic surgery can be necessary in non-growing patients with severe skeletal problems. Fixed braces move the teeth and the jaw surgery, completed by an oral surgeon, moves the jaws into a better more aesthetic position.
